The displays at MAKS enabled one to trace a contemporary tendency of developing engines to power advanced civil and military aircraft based on the deep upgrade of well-proven designs and operation experience. Examples of continuous upgrade were the PS-90A engine powering the IL-96 and Tu-204, as well as the CFM 56 engine from CFMI.

Continuous refinement of AL-31 engine production procedures through the use of CALS techniques was presented by the Salyut company.

The meat of the show was the Russian-made Saturn AL-41 engine equipped with a supersonic 3D swivelling nozzle. It is designed to power a fifth-generation multirole combat aircraft. 

During the show, talks were under way on expanding the international cooperation in engine production. Russia's Saturn and French Snecma signed a memorandum on developing the SM146 engine to be installed on RRJ aircraft. 

Pratt & Whitney teamed up with Ilyushin to fit the Il-96P/T with PW2337 engines. Pratt & Whitney Р Rus is adapting Pratt & Whitney CanadaХs engines to manufacture them in Russia and mount them on Ansat and Mi-38 helicopters and Il-114-100 aircraft.
