The Mi-26T version has been rolled out featuring day and night capability with reduced crew and state-of-the-art avionics. the crew has been reduced to two personnel-pilot and co-pilot (with an operator included in case of wor with external loads). The new avionics ensures a capability to fly day and night in adverse weather. In 2002 a mock-up of the modernised Mi-26T cockpit was demonstrated at the show in Franborough.
The heavy Mi-26 transport helicopter is the world’s heaviest one. Designed at the Mil plant, it is currently in production of the JSC Rosvertol. Apart from the CIS countries, the Mi-26 choppers are in service with both military and commercial organisatons in India, Mexico, Malaysia, Peru, North Korea, South Korea and Greece. Moreover, the ”Mil punches” are operated by another dozen states on lease and under certain UN programmes.
Presently, the Mil is making a joint effort with Rostov helicopter builders to modernise the heavy chopper, in order to improve its performance and cost-effectiveness, and to expand the spheres and areas of employment.
