Description
A Digital Elevation Model (DEM) is a representation of the terrain using point elevation infor-
mation referenced to the nodes of a rather fine regular grid, and is a digital presentation of the
terrain elevation features on a topographic map.
• Application
DEM is a source of data for the operations of a Terrain Awareness Warning System (TAWS) and
AMMS global navigation and landing system, it can also be used for the ground mission sup-
port software and a chart server.
• Characteristics
The digital model of the terrain is produced on the basis of landscape photographs made
from the space. For the efficient operation of the TAWS system, TRANSAS uses a digital
model with varying resolution of the regular grid for different phases of the flight
