Description |
 Further development of the air defense system elaboration was the `BUK` complex. The air defense missile system `BUK` consisted of the circular surveillance radar (detection and target designation station), the control post, six self - propelled firing units and three launching - loading units. The main requirements for the new complex were: simultaneous hitting of six targets, target detection range of not less than 100 kilometers, the hitting zone -the range from 3 to 30 km. and the altitude from 25 meters to 18 kilometers. A.A.Rastov was appointed chief designer. For the first time in the home practice the mobile multipurpose air defense complex was created, the software of which allowed to solve tactical tasks. The placing of a multi - functional radar, a six missiles launcher, control and communication equipment on the self - propelled chassis gave the opportunity for the autonomous work of the firing unit on target detection, tracking and hitting. The control post equipment provided with the calculating analysis of the air situation in the air defense complex coverage zone, the self - propelled unit condition control and target distribution according to the weapon channels, based on the data from the detection and targeting station. The whole work was held in automatic, semiautomatic or manu-al regimes. In 1979 `BUK` was accepted for armament in the Soviet Army. The technical potential of the `BUK` complex allowed to accomplish the optimization of characteristics with minimal upgrade of the equipment. The air defense complex `BUK M - 1`, accepted to armament in 1983, provided the targets hitting zone of 3 - 35 kilometers of range; 0,015 - 22 kilometers of altitude, and also the hitting of cruise missiles and hover helicopters
