Brief historical overview
The IRKUT Corporation traces its roots back to the 1930s, when in the spring of 1932, the major IRKUT’s predecessor – "Plant No.125" – was founded in the outskirts of Irkutsk, on the bank of the Angara river.
The high-tempo construction had been completed within two years. As a result, Plant No.125 was put into operation on 24 August 1934. It was entered officially into the Register of operating enterprises of the Soviet heavy industry on 8 September 1934.
As a result of consolidation of the Plant No.125 with one of the aircraft manufacturing plants evacuated from Moscow Irkutsk Aviation Plant No.39 was established in 1941.
During the World War 2 the Irkutsk Plant made a significant contribution to the victory of the Allied Powers, supplying thousands of combat aircraft to the Russia’s Air Force.
After the World War 2 the plant became one of the leading enterprises of the national aviation industry with a considerable role in build-up of air power of the USSR and its Allies.
The Irkutsk Plant played the major role in launching licensed production of advanced fighter-bomber in India in mid- 1980s.
On the basis of the Irkutsk Aviation Plant, the Irkutsk Aviation Industrial Association (IAIA) was formed in April 1989. It was transformed into a Joint Stock Company in October 1992.
Advanced CAD/CAM/CAE technologies introduced in late 1980s helped to significantly cut time required for mastering series production of new products.
Due to the up-to-date quality management system, the Irkutsk Aviation Plant was the first enterprise of the Russia’s aviation industry to be granted the ISO 9002 Certificate of compliance with the international quality standards in 1997. Its validity was extended for another three years in August 2000.
The IRKUT Corporation was established in 2000, with affiliation of the Irkutsk Aviation Industrial Association JSC, Beriev Design Bureau JSC, BETA-AIR JSC, “Russkaya Avionika” Avionics Design Bureau, and ITELA JSC.
For nearly seventy years, the IRKUT Corporation and affiliated companies have been manufacturing aircraft of over twenty-five types, developed by virtually every aviation design bureau of the USSR and Russia.
New aircraft always featured the engineering and technology solutions, unique to the world aviation industry at the time. Over 30 nations have been successfully flying aircraft produced by the IRKUT Corporation. The IRKUT’s package of contracts on military and civil aircraft is estimated as exceeding US$ 4 bln.
The IRKUT Corporation activities engage more than 12,000 employees. Nearly 25 % of IRKUT’s employees are engaged in various professional development and advanced vocational training programs.
With almost 1,500 firms, supplying components and materials to the IRKUT, the corporate orders portfolio creates nearly 100,000 additional jobs in associated businesses.
To keep the manufacturing facilities at the technological edge, the Corporation actively introduces high-tech innovative solutions.
The long-term strategy of the IRKUT Corporation development consists in:
- transformation of the IAIA and affiliated companies into an integrated multiproduct corporation capable of designing, manufacturing, and after-sale supporting of military and civil aircraft as well as aircraft aggregates and units;
- implementation of a variety of long-term investment programs in cooperation with domestic and foreign partners.
The corporate transformation plan is based on a full-scale evolution of the management structure and a holding company concept. The new architecture will consist of three levels: holding-as-a-whole management implemented in the Moscow Corporate Management Centre; strategic trends management in business units; and current production-and-logistics management of both affiliated and rented manufacturing facilities implemented in the Irkutsk Processing Centre. Information support of managerial decision-making will be carried out via an integrated automated management system. |
