Gas-jet units were designed by J.S.C. ”Samara Machine - Building Design Bureau” as a result of conversion of NK-22 and NK-12MV aircraft engines. A special flat-slot ejector-type nozzle with variable angle of jet vector was designed as a part of these units.
OS-1, OS-2, OS-3, OS-4, OS-5 are on base of DE-224-235 prime mover (production of Byelorussia) and OS-12 - on base of KrAZ and MAZ truck.
The units consist of:
- modified gas generators of NK-22, NK-12MV engines with intake device;
- ejector-type flat-slot nozzle with gas extraction;
- supporting frame;
- mounting hardware;
- fuel tank (capacity - 5 t of kerosene);
- TA-6A accessory unit;
- engine starting system with compressed-air starter for the start of rotors;
- fuel, oil, electric lines for engine operation supply;
- gas-jet device control system, which consists of peak limiters, electronic gas temperature regulator, control desk, panels with engine instrumentation;
- gas-jet unit control cabin.
Principle of operation is as follows: gas-air jet from flat-slot nozzle generates a powerful inflow of atmospheric air with a definite rarefaction over the surface of a runway and without intolerable heating of a runway. That’s why it is possible to remove foreign subjects from airfields and to dry runways. Snow and ice (thicking 3 - 5 cm) are effectively detached from the surface and are thrown out the border of a runway.
