Historical Background

Verkhnaya Salda Metallurgical Production Association (VSMPO)
is the world’s largest integrated producer of titanium, aluminum, magnesium and nickel alloys and steels.

The Company does business with more than 260 companies from 39 countries worldwide.

VSMPO’s products find their application in aerospace, energy, chemical and automobile sectors, shipbuilding and architecture.

The history of VSMPO goes back to the year 1933, when a new plant for production of aluminum and magnesium alloys for aircraft application was put into operation near Moscow.

In 1941 when World War II hostilities were approaching Moscow, the decision was made to move the plant to the Urals, to the town of Verkhnaya Salda. During the World War II (1941-1945) the plant fully satisfied the Soviet aviation needs with its products.

With the growth in demand for titanium alloy components for jet engine application in the 1950s, the plant was reconstructed to start manufacturing titanium mill products.

In 1989 the plant produced a record amount of more than 100,000 t of ingots, 30% higher than the total output of the rest of the titanium producers in the world.

In 1998 VSMPO bought shares of AVISMA – the world’s largest titanium sponge producer and the European largest magnesium producer, and VSMPO-AVISMA corporation with the integrated corporate management was established.
