Brief history

The Rosoboronexport State Corporation is a legal successor to state exporting agencies having operated in the USSR and Russia. Its history starts in 1953 with establishment of the General Engineering Department (GED) within the Ministry of Internal and Foreign Trade to carry out large-scale deliveries of Soviet-made arms and military equipment.

As military-technical cooperation of the USSR with foreign states expanded, new specialised organisations were created. Thus, in 1968 the General Technical Department (GTD) was founded on the basis of the GED to render technical assistance in building military installations abroad, and in 1989 the General Cooperation Department (GCD) - to cooperate with Warsaw Pact countries.

In 1992 the GED and GTD were transformed into state foreign trade associations - Oboronexport and Spetzvneshtechnika respectively, which then merged in November 1992 with the GCD into a single state corporation for export and import of armament and military equipment - Rosvoorouzhenie. In August 1997 the Rosvoorouzhenie State Corporation was transformed into a federal state unitary enterprise.

At last, in November 2000 in accordance with the Decree of the President Vladimir Putin the Rosoboronexport State Corporation was established on the basis of two federal state unitary enterprises - the Rosvoorouzhenie and Promexport.
