Brief History

The A.S. Yakovlev Design Bureau has come into being in the process of creation of its first aircraft AIR-1 as an independent, non-drawn up by any order, group of designers and workers. The Design Bureau`s birthday is customary to assume 12 May, 1927 - the day of AIR-1 flight tests start.

The Design Bureau activity consists of more than 200 aircraft types and modifications, including 100 production ones. Since 1932 the YAK aircraft are under continuous and large-scale production and operation. For 70 years 7000 aircraft has been built - the largest amount for the Russian companies.

The company is notable for the most versatile spheres of activities among the native aircraft companies. Under the leadership of Designer General A.S. Yakovlev and his successors the civil and military aircraft, helicopters, gliders and unmanned aerial vehicles were designed.

The YAK aircraft got a widespread both inside and outside of our country and in some countries where built under the licence. Nowadays thousands of YAK light aircraft are flying in the sky of many countries.

Many of our passenger aircraft are found abroad, including the Yak-40, the only Soviet aircraft that was certified according to the Western airworthiness requirements and was bought by 18 countries. The American Gulfstream-200, designed by the A.S. Yakovlev Design Bureau, is now under series production.

In 1927, flying on AIR-1, our pilots made the first Soviet World Records and totally 86 records were made by our pilots, flying on the 19 types of light, passenger and military aircraft.

The Design Bureau was awarded by the Order of Lenin, Red Banner, October Revolution, Honorable Diploma of International Aviation Federation (FAI). The YAK aircraft were awarded by the Lenin and eight State premium and the Golden medal of FAI.

The joint stock company `A.S. Yakovlev Design Bureau` remains one of the leading Russian aviation enterprises.
