Brief history

The history of Kazan Helicopters dates back to 1933 when a wood manufacturing facility was founded in Kazan city situated on the Volga river. In 1941 the light by plane Po-2 became the first aircraft to be produced by the company, which manufactured more than 10,000 units during the Second World War representing 10% of the total war production of aircraft of the Soviet Union.

Serial production of helicopters began in 1951 with the light Mi-1 helicopter designed by Mil, followed thereafter by the Mi-4. In 1956 Kazan Helicopters started to export its helicopters. Manufacture of the Mi-8 family of helicopters began in 1965 and became the milestone in the company’s history. The current Mi-17 helicopter type is the collective result of enormous experience gained during production and operation of Mi-8 helicopters. Kazan Helicopters remains one of the largest producers of medium helicopters in the world, with more than 10,000 Mi-4, Mi-8, Mi-14 and Mi-17 helicopters delivered to more than 80 countries worldwide.
